Minnesota County Attorney demands federal information, records related to Alex Pretti killing
The attorney's office said examples of the evidence and information it seeks include physical evidence such as firearms, cartridge casings, and uniforms along with all videos and photographs recorded by federal agents.
Minnesota's Hennepin County Attorney’s office on Wednesday called for the Trump administration to turn over records and evidence related to the killing of Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot by a federal officer in Minneapolis last month.
Pretti, an ICU nurse, was shot during an altercation with federal law enforcement. The officers involved in Pretti's death have been placed on leave amid an investigation into the shooting.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty's office accused the administration of "hiding evidence" in regard to the shooting. She also called for federal records related to the shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis last month.
“Hiding evidence and obstructing our investigation is unacceptable and indicates a total lack of confidence in their agents’ actions,” Moriarty said in a statement. “We are prepared to take further legal action should the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice fail to meet our deadline and continue to obstruct our investigations.
“Our work will reflect our commitment to transparency and accountability, even as the federal government tries to avoid both,” she added.
Moriarty's office demanded the FBI reverse its decision on cooperating with her office and the BCA and turn over the records by March 3.
The attorney's office said examples of the evidence and information it seeks include physical evidence such as firearms, cartridge casings, and uniforms along with all videos and photographs recorded by federal agents.
The office also demanded the names of all federal agents and officers involved in the shootings, statements from federal agents or officers regarding the shootings, medical records for agents or officers for any injury related to the shootings and a list of the policies and procedures in effect on the date of the shootings.
