Springfield mayor discourages Trump from visiting Ohio city, citing a strain on their resources

“It would be an extreme strain on our resources. So it’d be fine with me if they decided not to make that visit,” Mayor Rob Rue said during a news conference at City Hall.

The Republican mayor of Springfield, Ohio, on Tuesday appeared to discourage former President Donald Trump from visiting the city, because such a visit would strain the city's resources after it experienced multiple bomb threats over the past week.

Trump floated a possible visit to the Ohio city last week, in order to show what is happening in Springfield, where reports have surfaced that Haitian migrants are stealing and eating pets. Local and state officials have strongly rejected the allegations, claiming that there have been no "credible reports" of the immigrants eating the animals.

Springfield has also been forced to evacuate its city hall and multiple schools over the past week because of bomb threats.

“It would be an extreme strain on our resources. So it’d be fine with me if they decided not to make that visit,” Mayor Rob Rue said during a news conference, per NBC News.

Ohio GOP Gov. Mike DeWine backed up Rue's comment during a visit to Springfield on Tuesday, claiming that a visit from the former president would normally be welcomed, but now could pose serious concerns.

“I have to state the reality, though, that resources are really, really stretched here,” DeWine said,

Trump has not committed to visiting the town, but vowed to deport thousands of migrants from Ohio and Aurora, Colorado, if he returns to the White House next year. Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance has also not committed to visiting Springfield.
