Virginia Democrats kept their narrow control of the state legislature on Tuesday night, after a series of special elections saw Democrats winning two of the three contests.

Democrats won one state House of Delegates race and one state Senate race in northern Virginia,  while Republicans won one state Senate race west of Richmond, according to NBC News and Associate Press race calls.

The special elections were triggered after two of the officeholders won Congressional seats in the November general election, and one election occurred after the incumbent opted to run for the other chamber.

In the northern Virginia state Senate race, Democrat Kannan Srinivasan, currently a member of the state House, defeated Republican Tumay Harding. In the Loudon County House race, Democrat JJ Singh defeated Republican Ram Venkatachalam for a seat currently held by Srinivasan.

Republican Luther Cifers, who runs a kayak sales company, defeated Democrat Jack Trammel for the other state Senate seat. The seat was left vacant after GOP Rep. John McGuire was elected to Congress in November.

The results give Democrats a 21-19 majority in the state Senate, and a 51-49 majority in the House of Delegates.
