The powerful winter storm sweeping across Virginia this weekend has created hazardous travel conditions, with the Virginia State Police reporting nearly 250 crashes across the state as of Sunday morning. 

Of the 240 crashes, 16 resulted in injuries, according to reports. 

"Virginia State Police strongly urge everyone to heed the advice from state agencies and avoid traveling at this time. Unnecessary travel is creating dangerous situations and putting lives at risk," the agency said in a statement on Sunday.

The most crashes have occurred in Central Virginia (Richmond), Western Virginia (Roanoke) and the Hampton Roads area.

Officials are emphasizing caution, reminding drivers that slick bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads can be especially dangerous in freezing conditions.
