General Motors this week said it would "pause" advertising on Twitter after billionaire Elon Musk secured a takeover of the site with the express goal of expanding free speech upon it.

The storied car company told media on Friday that it was "engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership."

"As is normal course of business with a significant change in a media platform, we have temporarily paused our paid advertising," the company said, adding that its "customer care interactions on Twitter will continue."

Musk secured the $44 billion Twitter deal late this week, promptly firing several of the company's top executives as part of a high-profile effort to reduce censorship on the popular microblogging site.
