A New Mexico jury on Friday found Facebook liable for misleading users about privacy protections on its platform, marking the latest legal setback for the social media giant.

The jury determined that Facebook, which is owned by parent company Meta, committed more than 43 million violations of New Mexico’s consumer protection law. 

The judge will decide the amount that the company will ultimately have to pay. 

Attorneys representing the state are seeking the maximum penalty of $5,000 for each violation.

“The verdict marks a significant victory for New Mexico consumers and holds one of the world’s largest technology companies accountable for its conduct,” the New Mexico Department of Justice said in a statement.
