Alaska Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom on Tuesday announced she would seek election to the U.S. House in 2024, hoping to boot Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola from the state's sole congressional seat.

Though Alaska is typically a Republican bastion, the Democratic Peltola won election to the seat in a special election in August of 2022. She later won a full term that year, beating out former Gov. Sarah Palin and Republican Nick Begich, who split the GOP vote. Begich has since announced his own congressional bid.

Dahlstrom announced her campaign in a press release posted to X, stating that "Alaska needs a proven tough fighter to stop the assault on Alaska from Joe Biden and Washington, D.C., liberals."

"Raising my four kids and working my way up in the private sector before giving back to serve Alaskans, I have seen how D.C. politicians betray Alaskans every day," she continued. "In Congress, I will stop Biden and the extreme liberals ruining our future, bankrupting our families, killing our jobs, harming our military and veterans, and threatening our security."

Dahlstrom became lieutenant governor in December of 2022. She succeeded Kevin Meyer as Gov. Mike Dunleavy's running mate after Meyer chose not to seek a second term in the lt. governorship.

Begich, for his part, reacted to Dahlstrom's campaign, telling Politico "[o]ur team is 100% focused on continuing to build our already significant statewide effort to defeat Mary Peltola and restore commonsense, fiscally responsible representation on behalf of Alaska."
