Trump wins enough delegates to claim GOP nomination, AP projects

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday was projected to win enough delegates to claim the Republican presidential nomination, ending a contentious primary that saw him fend off a litany of GOP challengers.

Following a projected win in Washington, the Associated Press projected Trump to win 1,215 delegates of the necessary 1,215 to claim the party nomination. The remaining states will still hold nominating contests, though all of Trump's opponents of significant standing have withdrawn their candidacies and Trump has cleared the delegate requirement.

Earlier in the evening, Trump was projected to win Georgia and Mississippi.

His victory on Tuesday evening places him in a select group of modern American presidential candidates to win their party nomination three times. To date, however, only President Grover Cleveland has served non-consecutive terms. A Trump victory in November would see the Republican repeat that feat.

President Joe Biden, likewise, was projected to win enough delegates to claim the Democratic nomination on Tuesday.
