House set to vote, expected to pass measure for Jan. 6 commission that Trump calls 'Democrat trap'
The commission – similar to the 9/11 commission that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks – is being proposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The Democrat-controlled House is set to vote Wednesday on a measure to form an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, a proposal President Trump is calling a "Democrat trap."
The commission – similar to the 9/11 commission that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks – is being proposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The measure is expected to pass in the House, with support from dozens of rank-and-file House Republicans.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy opposes the commission, arguing like Trump that it should look into last summer’s social justice demonstrations, which in some instances devolved into riots.
However, the measure is expected to have a difficult time getting passed in the Senate, split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has taken a more wait-and-see approach, compared to McCarthy.
"Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission," Trump said Tuesday in a statement.
