Jan. 6 committee has no plans to call on Donald Trump

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot does not have plans to call former President Donald Trump to testify before the panel, Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said.

"We’ve looked at talking to a lot of people. We’ve not canceled out anything, but there’s no feeling among the committee to call [Trump] as a witness at this point," Thompson told reporters on Tuesday, The Hill reported.

When asked whether Trump would lie to the panel, Thompson said the committee is concerned about whether the former president would help the probe.

"We’re not sure that the evidence that we received can be any more validated with his presence," he noted, adding, "I think the concern is whether or not he would add any more value with his testimony."

The committee is preparing for eight hearings through June as midterm elections are approaching this fall, putting the investigation in jeopardy if Democrats fail to maintain control of the House.

The Democratic-controlled panel subpoenaed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and four other Trump-allied Republican representatives last week.
