President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night during his State of the Union address that he will award U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The award, which is the nation's highest civilian honor, comes after the team defeated Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy over the weekend to win a gold medal.

"I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor, which will be given and which has been given to many athletes over the years ... the Presidential Medal of Freedom," Trump said. "Great athletes have gotten that — very great, the best, and I thought he deserved it."

The men's team attended the State of the Union as Trump's guests. Trump also invited the women's team after they defeated Canada for the gold at the Olympics last week, but the team declined because of scheduling issues.
