Trump encourages Congress to hold Garland in inherent contempt
Trump said he agrees with Luna's efforts to hold Garland in inherent contempt and urged Republicans to also investigate Special Counsel Jack Smith over his criminal investigations into the former president
Former President Donald Trump urged the House on Wednesday to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in inherent contempt after he failed to comply with a congressional subpoena.
Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced an inherent contempt resolution against Garland last month, after the Justice Department announced it would not take action against the attorney general over his failure to comply with a subpoena regarding audio recordings of President Joe Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur.
Trump said he agrees with Luna's efforts to hold Garland in inherent contempt and urged Republicans to also investigate special counsel Jack Smith over his criminal investigations into the former president.
"Republicans MUST GET TOUGH about stopping weaponization and cheating," Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social. "They may just be coming for me and my elections today, but they will come for all the Republicans very soon if they succeed!"
Inherent contempt would normally force the House Sergeant at Arms to detain Garland and bring him before the lower chamber. However, Luna has proposed that the Congress fine Garland $10,000 a day until he complies with their subpoena instead of arresting him.
The House Judiciary Committee has also filed a lawsuit against Garland over the tapes, which Biden has exerted executive privilege over. But Republicans have rejected the executive privilege argument, because the lower chamber already has a transcript of the interview.
The House is expected to vote on the contempt measure on Wednesday evening.
