Trump puts out a statement in support of AG Paxton after acquittal
The former president also gave a shoutout to Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick.
Former President Donald Trump put out a statement on TRUTH Social Saturday in support of GOP Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after his acquittal on 16 articles of impeachment.
"Congratulations to Attorney General Ken Paxton on a great and historic Texas sized VICTORY," Trump wrote. "I also want to congratulate his wonderful wife and family for having had to go through this ordeal, and WINNING!"
Paxton faced 16 articles of impeachment that alleged he used his power and office to help donor-investor Nate Paul work through legal difficulties. He was also accused of accepting bribes in the form of renovations to his home. One of the articles of impeachment was about a job from Nate Paul for a woman with whom Paxton was having an extramarital affair.
Paxton denied all allegations and the state Senate voted to acquit him on all counts Saturday.
Trump also gave a shoutout to Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick.
"I want to thank the great Lt. Governor of Texas, Dan Patrick, who served as Judge in the Ken Paxton Trial, and the Republican State Senators, for showing great Professionalism and Fairness," he stated.
Paxton issued his own press release that said he would continue his job as attorney general and defend constitutional rights.
"Now that this shameful process is over, my work to defend our constitutional rights will resume," he said. "Thank you to everyone who has stood with us during this time."
