Trump salutes D-Day 'heroes' on 80th anniversary of Normandy landings
Trump's remarks came as American lawmakers visited Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of the landings.
Former President Donald Trump on Thursday marked the anniversary of the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy with a salute to the participants in that key action of the Second World War.
American, British, Canadian, and other Allied forces beginning on June 6, 1944, conducted an large-scale amphibious landing on the French coast, punching a hole through the German "Atlantic Wall" and reestablishing an Allied position on continental western Europe. The Allies subsequently liberated France and pushed into Germany proper, winning war in 1945.
"Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth," Trump posted on Truth Social. "They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time."
Trump's remarks came as American lawmakers visited Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of the landings. Nine Republicans and one Democratic House lawmaker joined together Thursday to parachute into Normandy while wearing World War II-era uniforms.
