Trump stops short of endorsing candidate in Republican Senate primary during Texas speech
The president has indicated that he does not plan to endorse any of the three candidates because all are loyal supporters.
President Donald Trump Friday afternoon gave shoutouts to the three Republicans in Texas who are running for the party's nomination for Senate but stopped short of giving any of them an actual endorsement.
The president has indicated that he does not plan to endorse any of the three candidates because all are loyal supporters.
GOP Sen. John Cornyn is running for reelection against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt.
“We have a great Attorney General Ken Paxton. Where’s Ken? Hi, Ken,” Trump said during remarks in Corpus Christi. “We have a great senator, John Cornyn. Hi, John. Thank you, John. They’re in a little race together. You know that, right? It’ll be an interesting one, right? They’re both great people too. Thank you both very much. I appreciate it.”
Trump later highlighted Hunt, who was also in the audience during his energy speech and is running third in the Republican primary.
“Another friend of mine who’s doing really well, Wesley Hunt. Where’s Wesley?” he said. “You’re doing a good job. Well, you do have an interesting election."
The Texas primary will take place on March 3, but neither of the three GOP nominees are expected to secure enough votes for the nomination, meaning a run-off election will likely take place in May.
The Republican nominee is expected to face either Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett or state Democratic Rep. James Talarico in November.
