President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday praised Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis for seeking a special session of the state legislature that would discuss the implementation of the Trump administration's immigration agenda.

Trump thanked DeSantis in a post on Truth Social and encouraged other GOP governors to follow suit. Republican governors, including DeSantis, met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago recently to discuss his upcoming agenda and their role in helping carry it out.

DeSantis called for the special session on Monday, which would take place on Jan. 27. The move is the latest sign that Trump and the governor will work together over the next four years, despite being rivals during the Republican presidential primaries.

“State and local officials in Florida must help the Trump administration enforce our nation’s immigration laws,” DeSantis told reporters, per The Hill. “In order to do that effectively we are going to need legislation to impose additional duties on local officials and provide funding for those local officials. There also needs to be measures to hold people accountable for violating our anti-sanctuary policies and that Florida needs to make sure that we don’t have any lingering incentives for people to come into our state illegally.”

DeSantis said he was hoping the state legislature would approve funding for the "detention [and] relocation" of illegal immigrants, along with funding for "transportation infrastructure, local law enforcement support, and everything else needed for Florida to carry out this mission."

Neither Florida state Senate President Ben Albritton or state House Speaker Daniel Perez, both Republicans, have confirmed they will convene the special session so far.
