Virginia in play as poll shows Biden, Trump tied in the Old Dominion
Formerly a Republican bastion, the Old Dominion has skewed increasingly Democratic since President George W. Bush last won the state in 2004.
Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden appear locked in a close struggle for Virginia in the 2024 general election, according to a recent survey.
Formerly a Republican bastion, the Old Dominion has skewed increasingly Democratic since President George W. Bush last won the state in 2004. GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin's surprise 2021 win, however, has led Republicans to turn their gaze back toward the state.
In the latest Roanoke College survey, Biden and Trump tied at 42% support each among likely voters, though Biden edged out Trump 40% to 38% when third party candidates were included.
Overall, Biden's approval rating in the state stood at 35%, with 61% disapproving of his performance.
“These results suggest that Virginia could be ‘in play’ in November,” Roanoke College Professor Emeritus of Political Science said.
"[B]ut five months is an eternity in politics," he went on. "This tie or two-point lead seems dramatic, but they are within the margin of error of the results of the February 2024 and November 2023 Roanoke College Polls. Still, it seems that Trump is narrowing Biden’s lead, which has all but disappeared."
Conducted May 12-21, the survey questioned 711 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4.24%.
