Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday condemned an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in a phone call with the former president, and congratulated him on becoming the Republican nominee for president.

Trump was wounded in his right ear during the shooting at a Pennsylvania rally last Saturday, which resulted in two other people being critically wounded and two deaths. One of the deaths was the suspected shooter.

The former president said the call was a "very good phone call," and reiterated his promise to end the war in Ukraine. However, he did not go into detail on how he would stop the violence.

"I appreciate President Zelensky for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families," Trump said in a post to Truth Social. "Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."

The phone call comes almost five years after Trump and Zelensky had a different phone conversation that led to Trump's first impeachment. During that call, Trump urged Zelensky to investigate President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, over the latter's business dealings in the country.

Trump was impeached by the Democrat-led House over the phone call for abusing his power and obstruction, but he was acquitted by the Senate.

Zelensky said on Friday's phone call that his country was grateful for the aid that the United States has provided in its war with Russia, and that he will meet Trump later to discuss "what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting," according to CBS News.
