Former President Trump on Saturday called Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell as "the best thing that ever happened" to Democrats, after Senate Republicans agree with them to raise debt ceiling debate and which suggests continually fraying ties between Trump and the longtime GOP stalwart.

Trump's statement ostensibly came in response to recent Democratic efforts to pass their "voting rights" legislation.

"The Democrats are now on a new kick with their so-called Voting Rights Bill, which is a disaster for our Country and certainly the Republican Party," Trump said in the statement.

"The problem is, good old Mitch gave away our primary negotiating weapon --the debt limit, and he got nothing for it. This is Democrat controlled legislation that will make it virtually impossible for Republicans to win elections."

"It is a scam, as is everything else being put forth by the Democrats," he continued. "McConnell is the best thing that ever happened to them!"

The statement does indeed come several days after McConnell cut a deal in the Senate that allowed Congress to raise the debt limit. Yet Trump's remarks seem more timed to revelations on Friday that McConnell was more sympathetic to the congressional Jan. 6 committee than earlier anticipated.

“It was a horrendous event and I think what they are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know,” McConnell said during an interview with Specturm News.

Earlier in the week McConnell appeared to offer similar support of the committee's investigations, claiming he thought it "interesting to see what they conclude.”

Democrats and commentators have argued that the fault of the Jan. 6 riot -- what many have claimed was an "insurrection" or "attempted coup" -- lays with Trump, whom they argue incited the mob that day. The committee has been pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to the events of the day.
