Biden admin looking into Elon Musk amid Ukraine, Starlink drama: report
Government officials were reportedly concerned over recent, high-profile exchanges involving Musk, Russia, Ukraine.
The Biden administration is weighing a security review of Tesla CEO Elon Musk's upcoming purchase of social media giant Twitter and his operation of the Starlink satellite system amid fallout from a post the billionaire made polling his followers on a possible peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
The administration is reportedly mulling a move through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), according to the New York Post.
Government officials were reportedly concerned over recent, high-profile exchanges involving Musk, Russia, Ukraine. Musk, earlier this month, posted a poll on Twitter asking his followers to weigh in on a hypothetical deal between Kyiv and Moscow in which Ukraine would cede Crimea, remain a neutral country, and allow re-run referendums in the disputed regions under UN supervision.
Reports later emerged that Musk had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to making the post, a claim he denied. Also of interest to the government is a more recent exchange in which Musk approved of a joke Russian official Dmitry Medvedev posted in mockery of United Kingdom Prime Minister Liz Truss's resignation, per the Post.
Amid the conflict, Ukrainian forces have made use of the Musk-owned SpaceX's Starlink system. The company announced this month that it could no longer afford to fund the system and asked the federal government to foot the bill, before reversing course.
Musk already faces federal investigation over his prospective purchase of Twitter.
