Biden campaign warns of 'very close general election'

In a hypothetical matchup between the two, Trump edges out Biden by 0.5% in the RealClearPolitics polling average.

President Joe Biden's reelection camp has sounded the alarm that it expects a razor-thin contest with the eventual Republican presidential nominee.

At present, former President Donald Trump remains the clear front runner in the Republican primary in most polls. In a hypothetical matchup between the two, Trump edges out Biden by 0.5% in the RealClearPolitics polling average.

Amid those narrow margins, Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez issued a sobering memo, telling the team that while they feel "well-prepared to defeat whoever emerges from the extreme MAGA Republicans’ primary field... this will be a very close general election," The Hill reported.

"We expect this to be a very close race, but recent strong Democratic performances in every battleground state — and President Biden and Vice President Harris’s win in 2020 — demonstrate that the president has multiple paths to earning 270 electoral votes next November," she further stated.

Trump has not yet claimed the party nomination and the next Republican primary debate is slated for Nov. 8, though he does not plan to attend. Placing second and third, respectively, are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Biden, for his part, is underwater across the board. Overall, he maintains an average 40.8% approval rating in the RCP average, compared to a 55.8% disapproval. His performance on specific issues, however, is generally lower. He sits a 38.0% on the economy, 38.0% on foreign policy, 33.6% on inflation, 36.3% on crime, and 33.0% on immigration. On the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he earns a higher 42.3%.
