President Joe Biden has tapped former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to serve as the nation's representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The ICAO Council advises the UN specialized agency on how best to maintain stable civil air travel around the world.

The post requires Senate confirmation and comes with the rank of ambassador. The White House called Crist "a staunch environmental advocate, working at the federal and state levels to help secure billions in public and private aid to restore the Florida Everglades."

Crist served as governor from 2007 to 2011. He was elected as a Republican but became an independent in 2010 after losing the Republican Senate primary. He ran for governor as a Democrat in 2014 and later secured election to Congress.

In 2022, he decisively lost a third gubernatorial bid to incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who retained his position by a more than 19-point margin.
