Biden signs $1.7 trillion omnibus on vacation after feds fly the bill to St. Croix

President Joe Biden on Thursday signed the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package while on vacation in St. Croix.

The bill was flown to the Virgin Islands for his signature after the paperwork was not completed prior to his departure from Washington, according to CNN.

The package includes more than $850 billion for defense spending, more than $770 billion in domestic discretionary spending, and roughly $45 billion in aid to Ukraine and NATO.

Senate Republicans led by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell lined up to advance the measure over the objections of the House GOP, which had advocated that lawmakers wait to set the 2023 budget until they could take control of the lower chamber next week and extract concessions from the Democrats.

McConnell declined to do so.

His position on the matter has driven a wedge between the Kentucky Republican and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is currently struggling to secure enough votes to become Speaker of the House amid opposition to his leadership from some conservative members of his caucus.
