Biden taps two Republicans to serve on FTC
Current Chairman Lina Khan, a Democrat, welcomed the nominations of her would-be Republican colleagues.
President Joe Biden has announced his nomination of two Republicans to serve on the Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC is traditionally a bipartisan board and it's not uncommon for a president to nominate potential commissioners from the opposite party.
In a Monday statement, the White House confirmed that Biden planned to submit Virginia Solicitor General Andrew Ferguson and Utah Solicitor General Melissa Holyoak to the Senate for confirmation.
The FTC includes five commissioners. Current Chairman Lina Khan, a Democrat, welcomed the nominations of her would-be Republican colleagues.
"I congratulate Andrew Ferguson and Melissa Holyoak on their nominations to serve on the Federal Trade Commission," she said, per the Epoch Times. "Each would bring key skills, experiences, and expertise to the Commission as we work to promote fair competition and protect Americans from unfair or deceptive practices."
"The Commission operates best at full strength, and I look forward to working with them to fulfill the important mandate Congress has given us," she continued.
The FTC is tasked with protecting consumers from anticompetitive and unfair business practices.
To that end, Khan announced in late June that the FTC would sue Amazon over an alleged scheme to involuntarily enroll consumers in Amazon Prime.
"Amazon tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money," she said at the time.
