Several close Senate races decided but control of chamber still unclear
Races in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are among the states in which close races are still being decided.
Republicans notched several wins in key Senate races Tuesday night but control of the Senate remains unclear as several races remain too close to call.
Several election forecasters, including 538 and RealClearPolitics, had projected the GOP to take the Senate, though the much-hyped "red wave" has yet to materialize.
Republican North Carolina Republican Rep. Ted Budd managed to hold the seat for the Republican Party and will succeed retiring Republican Sen. Richard Burr.
Budd slightly underperformed polling projections, notching a 4% win instead of the predicted 6%, but still won on Election Night.
Ohio Republican candidate J.D. Vance also claimed a decisive election night victory, beating out Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan for the seat by a 7.0% margin, according to the Associated Press. He will replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman.
Showdowns in Georgia, Arizona and Nevada currently remain uncalled.
In Pennsylvania, Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman narrowly defeated the GOP's Dr. Mehmet Oz, with the Associated Press calling the race early Wednesday morning. The race marks the first pickup for Democrats during the Senate contest.
In the leadup to the contest, Oz erased his opponent's once-solid lead, aided in part by persistent concerns over the Fetterman's health following a major stroke in May.
Georgia is among the pivotal states that could decide control of the upper chamber. Trump-backed Republican candidate Herschel Walker and Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock are deadlocked at 49% with a runoff election potentially looming.
Arizona is a toss-up with large part of the vote still uncounted. Trump-backed businessman Blake Masters is attempting to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly.
Nevada is one of the GOP's best hopes to gain a Senate seat, as former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt had consistently outperformed incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.
In Wisconsin, GOP Sen. Ron Johnson leads Democrat Mandela Barnes, though no news outlet has called the race. Johnson held 50.7% of the vote with 91% of precincts reporting as of press time.
