Cornel West looks to Michigan to draw Biden's progressive detractors
West's efforts to target traditional Democratic constituencies could potentially prove pivotal in undercutting Biden's reelection efforts.
Left-wing intellectual Cornel West plans to begin the year with a string of campaign stops in swing-state Michigan, hoping to pick up support from key progressive constituencies with whom Biden has struggled to maintain support.
Key among West's target groups is the Islamic population in Dearborn. President Joe Biden has witnessed his support fall among Arab and Muslim Americans amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and West hopes to rally them with his position on the matter.
"We're the only major candidate, I think, who's bringing any kind of sanity and sensitivity to the suffering in Gaza," he said, according to Politico. "Just strikes me that all the other three major candidates are living in a Neolithic Age when it comes to dealing with what's going on in the Middle East. They would take us back, and I'm the only one who would take us forward."
West also plans to visit with environmental activists in Flint and to court university students and native groups, the outlet reported.
The Wolverine State is one of a handful of states expected to be closely competitive in the 2024 presidential election. Former President Donald Trump managed to win the state in 2016, though Biden managed to flip it back in 2020.
