Florida first lady says Biden admin omits 'Democrat lockdowns' as reason students falling behind

Florida first lady Casey DeSantis says the Biden administration in its recent assessment that students in U.S. public schools are months behind in reading and math as a result of the pandemic failed to rightfully attribute some of the blame to "Democrat lockdowns." 

"The latest 'report' from the Biden administration ignores the real reason for catastrophic learning loss: Democrat lockdowns," she tweeted Wednesday.

DeSantis, the wife of Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, tweeted after the White House said that American K-12 public school students are "on average two to four months behind in reading and math because of the COVID-19 pandemic," according to the Epoch Times.  

She also argued the governor has kept Florida public schools open for in-classroom learning amid the pandemic.

"Kids were in school, in person," she also wrote. 

DeSantis also spoke out one day after the administration announced a plan to add 250,000 tutors and mentors across the country within the next three years to "help address the impact of missed instruction on our nation’s students," the Times also reports.

President Biden wants schools to use at least some of the $122 billion in federal American Rescue Plan funds to support summer learning, and after-school and tutoring programs to help students “make up for lost learning time” and support their mental health.

The program will be a partnership among the Education Department, AmeriCorps and the Johns Hopkins University-affiliated think tank Everyone Graduates Center, also according to the Times.
