More than 1,000 federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers have tested positive for COVID-19, according to data reported by the agency.

"Overall, TSA has had 1,018 federal employees test positive for COVID-19. 647 employees have recovered, and 6 have unfortunately died as a result of the virus. We have also been notified that one screening contractor has passed away due to the virus," the TSA reports on its website.

The Washington Post noted that 907 TSA screening officers comprised the bulk of those who have tested positive.

Coronavirus cases have been surging in areas around the U.S., but the death rate has also declined.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday said that "it's a false narrative to take comfort in a lower rate of death. There's so many other things that are very dangerous and bad about this virus, don't get yourself into false complacency."

According to Johns Hopkins University there have been more than 3.1 million coronavirus deaths in the U.S. and more than 133,000 deaths.
