Dem Sen. Murphy endorses Alsobrooks in contested Maryland Senate primary
Alsobrooks is facing Maryland Democratic Rep. David Trone for the party nomination.
Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy weighed in on a hotly contested primary contest for the Democratic Senate nomination in Maryland, backing Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
Alsobrooks is facing Maryland Democratic Rep. David Trone for the party nomination. Incumbent Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., is not seeking reelection. The winner of the primary will likely face former Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan.
"I'm proud to endorse Angela Alsobrooks for U.S. Senate," Murphy told The Hill. "Throughout her career, Angela has fought to tackle the gun violence epidemic, create good-paying jobs in her community, and make sure all students have access to a quality education. She's a proven leader for Maryland, and we need her in the Senate."
Recent polling this month has shown Trone with a modest lead over Alsobrooks of 42% to 33%, though both were trailing Hogan in one-on-one matchups. A former two-term governor of the state, Hogan's candidacy has made the race more competitive than expected in typically deep-blue Maryland.
He announced this week that he had raised more than $3.1 million since announcing his campaign in February.
