DNC paid Biden's legal expenses during Hur probe: Report
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur in January of last year following revelations that one of Biden's attorneys had discovered classified materials while clearing out Biden's former private office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington.
The Democratic National Committee paid for much of President Joe Biden's legal expenses while special counsel Robert Hur's investigation explored his handling of classified materials, Axios reported, citing "two people familiar with the matter" and the outlet's own review of campaign finance records.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur in January of last year following revelations that one of Biden's attorneys had discovered classified materials while clearing out Biden's former private office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington.
Hur published his findings just over a year later, and found "evidence that President Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen."
Throughout the process, the DNC reportedly paid more than $1.5 million to the president's legal representatives. That figure reportedly included $1.05 million to Bob Bauer PLLC, the eponymous firm of Biden's chief attorney. Axios also highlighted substantive upticks in payments to law firm Hemenway & Barnes.
The report appears to undercut criticisms from the Biden campaign over former President Donald Trump's use of campaign contributions to foot his own legal bills stemming from multiple criminal indictments his faces.
Trump faces two federal indictments from special counsel Jack Smith as well as charges from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
