Uvalde school board fires Police Chief Pete Arredondo

The Uvalde school board on Wednesday voted unanimously to fire Police Chief Pete Arredondo following the deadly school shooting that saw 19 children and two teachers killed.

Arredondo's attorney issued a statement shortly before the meeting, condemning what he saw as an effort to scapegoat him for the tragedy and asserted that the district was not following the legal procedure to fire him, according to CNN.

"Chief Arredondo will not participate in his own illegal and unconstitutional public lynching and respectfully requests the Board immediately reinstate him, with all backpay and benefits and close the complaint as unfounded," it read.

A Texas House report in July found "systemic failures and egregious poor decision-making" by law enforcement in their handling of the shooting.

Alleged gunman Salvador Ramos, 18, remained active in Robb Elementary School for 77 minutes until he was killed by a Border Patrol agent.

Arredondo resigned from the Uvalde City Council in early July, saying "[t]he mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde."
