Pro-Palestine 'Abandon Harris' movement expands reach into swing states Georgia and Wisconsin
The movement calls for voters who support a permanent end to the conflict in Gaza to support Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein instead of Harris in the swing states of Georgia and Wisconsin.
The predominantly Muslim and Arab group "Abandon Harris" said on Friday that it is expanding its reach into two crucial swing states, potentially pulling critical votes away from Vice President Kamala Harris.
The movement calls for voters who support a permanent end to the conflict in Gaza to support Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein instead of Harris in the swing states of Georgia and Wisconsin. They have labeled Harris as a "pro-genocide candidate" due to her support for Israel.
Democrats have warned voters that Stein could be a "spoiler candidate" that results in former President Donald Trump's return to the Oval Office. Stein was a "spoiler" in the 2016 election between Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Hassan Abdel Salam, an "Abandon Harris" spokesman, told the Washington Times that his group cannot support Harris because she has not advocated enough for a permanent ceasefire, or supported an arms embargo on Israel. Harris has maintained that Israel has a right to defend itself, but has also expressed empathy for the Palestinians caught in the crossfire.
“We have become familiar with the way in which the president and vice president double-talk to our community by making vague allusions of ending the genocidal war while permitting the state of Israel to continue their attacks on innocent people on the verge of disintegration,” Salam told the outlet.
“The vice president engages in ‘cease-fire teasing’ — a common practice that began with [President Biden] — by claiming that a cease-fire is on the horizon while children, women, and men are in flames, burning before our eyes," he added.
The movement could impact the election in Wisconsin, which was decided by less than 20,000 votes in 2020. The Muslim population of the swing state is 40,000, according to the U.S. Census. Trump and Harris are also extremely close in Wisconsin polls, and Harris trails Stein among the state's Muslim voters. But she does lead Trump in the demographic.
Trump is currently leading in Georgia, where he polls seven points ahead of the vice president.
