Chris Christie says probe of Hunter Biden either 'lie or it's incompetent'
"So either David Weiss is incompetent in taking five years to do that, or he’s not telling the truth," Christie also said.
Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie slammed U.S. Attorney David Weiss over his multi-year investigation into first son Hunter Biden that resulted in the Justice Department offering a plea deal.
"U.S. Attorney Weiss has to explain himself and he has to explain himself in public,” Christie told "Fox News Sunday" about the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for Delaware.
"You know, the fact is that this investigation of Hunter Biden in Delaware is either a lie or it’s incompetent. There’s no way that it should take five years to get to a two-count misdemeanor tax plea and then to dismiss the gun charges," Christie, a former federal prosecutor, said.
Hunter Biden reached a plea deal last month that would allow him to avoid time in prison by pleading guilty to two tax charges and admitting to a gun charge that may be dismissed.
"So either David Weiss is incompetent in taking five years to do that, or he’s not telling the truth," Christie also said. "And [Attorney General] Merrick Garland is not telling the truth. Either way, there’s a lot more work to be done on this case."
Christie's sentiment echoes that of other Republicans who disagree with the plea deal, such as Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson. The former governor's comments come as Weiss said Monday there was no political interference in his probe.
