Conservative nonprofit finds 25% of non-U.S. citizens in Maryland town voted illegally

The center said Wednesday it has referred the matter to the Justice Department after a FOIA request found that at least 25% of the people on Cheverly, Maryland's "non-citizen" voter roll voted in at least one federal election.

The conservative nonprofit American Center for Law & Justice revealed this week that at least one quarter of non-American citizens in a Washington, D.C. suburb voted illegally in at least one federal election in violation of United States law.

The center said Wednesday it has referred the matter to the Justice Department after a Freedom of Information Act request found that at least 25% of the people on Cheverly, Maryland's "non-citizen" voter roll voted in at least one federal election.

The town amended its charter in 2020 to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, but a review of 98 individuals on the "Non-citizen" Voter Registry found a quarter voted in federal and statewide elections between 2020 and 2024. The town held no local elections on the same day as federal elections those years.

The identities were verified by cross-checking the names and addresses against publicly available voter data.

"The astonishing number of individuals on the 'Non-citizen' Voter Registry showing up in public federal voter records is direct evidence of voter fraud, gross incompetence on behalf of the election officials maintaining the voter lists, or both," ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow wrote in a news release.

"Every time a noncitizen or other ineligible voter casts a ballot, it effectively cancels out the vote of a lawful voter. The lawlessness cannot go unchecked," the release added.

The revelation comes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, which will take place on Nov. 3.
