More than 50 million people have voted early in the 2024 election so far, according to data from the University of Florida's Election Lab, with Democrats noting a slight edge over Republicans in voter turnout.

The numbers are lower than the 2020 election between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. The 2020 election saw more than 101 million early votes cast, out of over 150 million total votes, which resulted in a narrow victory for Biden. But the previous election occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, when more Americans opted to vote by mail.

The early voting numbers support reports of a tight presidential election between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. However, Democratic voters account for 39.5% of votes so far, while Republicans make up 36.1%. Independent and third party voters make up 24.4% of the vote combined.

The data also reveals that 24 million mail ballots have been returned so far, and 27 million early votes have been cast in-person as of Tuesday afternoon.

The numbers do not account for early voting in Alabama, Oklahoma, and New Hampshire, which have not reported voting numbers so far, per the tracker.
