Georgia Democrat projected to win state House seat in district Trump won last year
Democrat Eric Gisler received about 200 votes more than Republican Mack Guest IV.
A Georgia Democrat on Tuesday is projected win a state House seat in a congressional district President Trump won last year, on the same night his party won the Miami mayoral race for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Georgia's Eric Gisler was projected to win against Republican Mack Guest IV in the election for House District 121, with the former receiving about 200 votes more than the latter, out of more than 11,000 in final unofficial returns, according to the Associated Press, which as of Wednesday morning had yet to officially declare a winner.
“I think we had the right message for the time,” Gisler told the AP. “A lot of what I would call traditional conservatives held their nose and voted Republican last year on the promise of low prices and whatever else they were selling. But they hadn’t received that.”
Guest didn't respond to a request for comment.
President Trump won the district last year by 12 points, according to Decision Desk HQ, The Hill news outlet reported.
Last month, Georgia Democrats also flipped two seats on the state Public Service Commission. In addition, Democrats won the New Jersey and Virginia governor races.
