Democratic Party attempts to keep Jill Stein from Wisconsin ballot
Senior DNC adviser Adrienne Watson claimed that Stein cannot be nominated by the Green Party properly in Wisconsin, because no member of the party holds a statewide office.
An employee for the Democratic National Committee on Wednesday filed a complaint against Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein in Wisconsin, claiming she should not be allowed to appear on the ballot because the Wisconsin Green Party doesn't hold any state offices.
Stein secured more votes than former President Donald Trump's margin of victory in Wisconsin during the 2016 presidential election, according to Fox News, which helped Trump win the election over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Trump won the state by roughly 27,000 votes, and Stein received 30,980 votes in 2016.
The employee, senior adviser Adrienne Watson, claimed that Stein cannot be nominated by the Green Party in Wisconsin, because no member of the party holds a statewide office.
"We take the nomination process for President and Vice President very seriously and believe every candidate should follow the rules," Watson told Fox News. "Because the Wisconsin Green Party hasn’t fielded candidates for legislative or statewide office and doesn’t have any current incumbent legislative or statewide office holders, it cannot nominate candidates and should not be on the ballot in November."
A spokesperson for Stein claimed that the DNC's allegations were part of its "anti-democratic shenanigans."
"This is a fishing expedition conjured up by the DNC, and is in line with their statements back in March that they will hire an army of lawyers and infiltrators to find any angle of attack to prevent Green Party ballot access," Stein's campaign manager Jason Call said. "We absolutely will be hiring counsel to defend our ballot line in Wisconsin."
Stein is expected to become the Green Party's official presidential nominee again in 2024 during a virtual meeting of the party this weekend.
