First Democrat lawmaker to push Biden to drop out admits Trump has 'advantage' over Harris right now
"Our folks need to not be overconfident and to realize Trump does have the advantage, and we have to overcome it,” he says
Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, the first Democrat lawmaker to call on President Joe Biden to step aside after the first presidential debate, tells Just the News that former President Donald Trump has the “advantage” in the race right now against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“He had a head start. He has a big following until only within the last few days he's been running ahead in all of the polls. She's been turning it around, but there's no doubt that when this convention is over, there will be sustained Republican lies and attacks as they've already started,” Doggett said during an interview at the Democratic National Convention.
“And if Trump can figure out what program he wants to advocate as the most effective, he will continue to assure this is a narrow election. I remember coming out of Boston, excuse me, coming out of Philadelphia and feeling so good about Hillary Clinton, and it didn't turn out the right way. So our folks need to not be overconfident and to realize Trump does have the advantage, and we have to overcome it,” he added.
Doggett said Harris will be able to articulate a similar agenda to Biden but in a more effective way.
“I don't think the specific policies are going to be very different from President Biden. It's a new messenger who approaches this with joy, with youthfulness and hope,” he said.
“So she takes accomplishments like the infrastructure bill, the CHIPS bill, and brings new life to them in a way that, unfortunately, President Biden just could not do,” he added.
