Former top GOP Rep. Mike Rogers launches Senate campaign in battleground state Michigan
Rogers is the most well-known candidate in the Michigan Republican primary so far.
Former top-ranking Republican Rep. Mike Rogers launched his 2024 Senate campaign on Wednesday in his home state.
Rogers, who served eight terms in Congress before deciding to not run in 2014, said in his first Senate campaign video: "I thought I put politics behind me, but like you, I know something's broken."
"Politicians are fighting over gas stoves while China is stealing our intellectual property and our jobs, and Biden is letting them do it," Rogers also said. "With your help, we'll get America back on track. No candidate is better prepared to have an impact on day one. I'm ready to serve again."
Rogers is running for the seat held since 2000 by Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who said in January that she will not seek reelection in 2024.
Republicans are looking to gain a seat in Michigan to take over the Senate in 2024.
Rogers, who chaired the House Intelligence Committee from 2011-2015, is the most well-known candidate in the Michigan Republican primary so far. He is likely to face a difficult battle in the general election, as Michigan has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1994.
However, Michigan elected then-candidate Donald Trump to the presidency in 2016, showing that Rogers may have a path to victory.
