Gavin Newsom jokes about Harris's no-primary nomination
'We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process,' Newsome joked
Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., joked about the nomination process for Vice President Kamala Harris. Newsom on Friday said he was instructed to call the nomination process "open" and "inclusive."
Critics of the Democratic Party criticized the nomination process, arguing Harris's nomination did not reflect the people's will. Newsom found the process humorous, Fox News reported.
"We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up. I don't know if you know that. That's what I've been told to say," Newsom said while laughing during a conversation on "Pod Save America" posted Friday. "Pod Save America" is a podcast hosted by several former Barack Obama aides.
Newsom joked that the party held a 30-minute convention between President Joe Biden's July 21 tweets, the first when he dropped out and the second when he endorsed Harris.
Not everyone found Newsom's comments amusing. "The Party of Democracy sits around guffawing at how anti-democratic and vote-free and secret was their process for choosing and then imposing the new Democratic presidential nominee on the country," journalist Glenn Greenwald responded.
