Georgia Democratic state Rep. Vernon Jones, who endorsed President Trump last year, announced on Wednesday that he is joining the GOP.

"Moments ago, I announced that I am officially joining the Republican Party," he Twitter after making the announcement at a pro-Trump rally in Washington. "Now more than ever, the Republican Party is in desperate need of leaders that know how to fight. I know how to fight."

Jones' announcement comes as the Democrats are on the verge of taking the majority in the U.S. Senate for the first time since they lost control in 2015.

"I'm ready to go home to the party of Lincoln," Jones said at the rally.
