Raffensperger says Georgia will post notices at polling stations saying only US citizens can vote
"This election will be decided by U.S. Citizens. Period,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger says notices will be posted at polling places reminding voters that only U.S. citizens can vote in elections.
The notice Thursday reads: "ONLY UNITED STATES CITIZENS MAY VOTE IN GEORGIA IF YOU ARE NOT A UNITED STATES CITIZEN, IT IS A VIOLATION OF STATE AND FEDERAL LAW TO VOTE."
“Casting a vote is one of the most important elements of American citizenship,” Raffensperger said in a statement Thursday. “Any illegal vote dilutes the value of a citizen’s lawfully cast ballot. This election will be decided by U.S. Citizens. Period.”
Georgia Code O.C.G.A. 21-2-216 (a)(2) states that "No person shall vote in any primary or election held in this state unless such person shall be a citizen of this state and of the United States."
Raffensperger made the announcement after the State Election Board voted on Monday to adopt a rule that will require all polling places have signage that states only U.S. citizens can vote.
