Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Wednesday called for politicians over the age of 75 to undergo "mandatory mental competency tests," in an implied reference to President Biden and her former boss former President Trump, as she kicked off her 2024 Republican presidential campaign.

"In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire," Haley, a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, said at a rally in Charleston, South Carolina. "We'll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old."

By the next scheduled presidential inauguration in 2025, Trump will be 78 and Biden will be 82. Haley will be 53.

Messaging for Haley's campaign, which formally launched Tuesday, has already stressed supporting younger leaders.

"Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections," Haley said in her first campaign video. "That has to change. It's time for a new generation of leadership."
