Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff donated to a liberal legal group in favor of defunding the police and permanently designating Washington, D.C as a “sanctuary city” that does not report illegal immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to their joint tax returns.

Harris and Emhoff donated $1,000 in 2021 and 2023 to Legal Aid DC, noted a Washington Examiner report.

Legal Aid DC describes itself as “the district’s oldest and largest civil legal services organization” helping to “make justice real in individual and systemic ways.”

Black Lives Matter's defund the police movement gained steam in the aftermath of George Floyd's death in May 2020.

Legal Aid DC said in a statement at the time that it “stands in solidarity with those speaking out, demonstrating, and demanding a country and society that will treat every one of its residents with dignity and respect.”

As protests spread across major cities in the U.S., Legal Aid DC posted on social media about its concerns related to hiring more police officers in Washington, D.C.

“As Legal Aid’s Amanda Korber noted in the article, we are concerned, especially given the ongoing protest movement, about any solution that involves more police and policing in DC public housing. #BlackLivesMatterDC,” read one of the group's posts.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates responded to Harris’s donations, according to the Washington Examiner, saying Legal Aid DC “helps clients who are suffering from domestic violence.”
