Hillary Clinton praises Harris's legacy during speech at Democratic convention

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Monday, during the first night of the Democratic convention in Chicago.

Clinton, who took the stage to thunderous applause, lost to Harris's rival former President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. 

The former first lady addressed the rise of women in politics, including the possibility of a woman being elected to the White House for the first time in American history this November. 

"The story of my life and the history of our country is that progress is possible but not guaranteed. We have to fight for it and never, ever give up," Clinton told the audience. "There is always a choice. Do we push forward or pull back? Come together as we the people or split into us versus them? That's the choice we face in this election. Kamala has the character, experience and vision to lead us forward."

Clinton claimed that her mother would be proud of the advances she has witnessed in the country, and would urge the country to continue moving forward.

"On her first day in court, Kamala said five words that guide her still: ‘Kamala Harris, for the people,'" Clinton said. "We are writing a new chapter in America's story. It was the honor of my life to accept our party's nomination for president. And nearly 66 million Americans voted for a future where there are no ceilings on our dreams, and afterwards, we refused to give up on America, millions marched. Many ran for office. We kept our eyes on the future."

She continued: "Well, my friends, the future is here. I wish my mother and Kamala's mother could see us. They would say, 'keep going.'"

Clinton also slammed Trump in the speech for mocking Harris's name and laugh, but claimed that Trump was now "on the run." She also claimed that Trump "would never understand" what it means to be "for the people."
