In deep blue Maryland, GOP's Hogan outpaces Democrat rival in fundraising in race for Senate seat
Maryland has not had a Republican senator since 1977.
Maryland GOP Senate candidate Larry Hogan, the state's two-term governor, is outpacing his Democrat rival in fundraising in their race for an open Senate seat, enhancing his bid to become the state's first Republican senator in roughly 47 years.
Hogan's fundraising network raised $6.6 million from April 1 and June 30, according to the latest Federal Election Commission filings. His Democratic opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, the top elected official in the state's Prince George's County, raised $5.7 million over the same period, FEC filings also show.
Still, Alsobrooks leads Hogan by 9 percentage points, according to the most recent RealClearPolitics.com polling average.
They are competing for the seat of retiring Democrat Sen. Ben Cardin.
The state's last GOP senator was J. Glenn Beall Jr. who served from 1971 to 1977.
“Our campaign is incredibly humbled by the support we’ve received across the state,” Hogan campaign spokeswoman Blake Kernen about the second-quarter money haul.
