A new administration is needed in Gaza to truly defeat Hamas, the chief spokesman for the Israeli military said on Wednesday.

He called on the Israeli government to move forward with a postwar plan for Gaza's leadership to prevent Hamas from rising to power again.

“The idea that it is possible to destroy Hamas, to make Hamas vanish — that is throwing sand in the eyes of the public,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said, according to the New York Times. “If we do not bring something else to Gaza, at the end of the day, we will get Hamas.”

Hamas came into power as a result of the 2006 election.
