Kamala Harris accepts invitation to attend Teamster roundtable
The union has not endorsed a candidate in the upcoming presidential election so far.
Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign on Friday accepted an invitation to attend a roundtable with members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).
Former President Donald Trump attended a roundtable with the union in January, and the union's General President Sean O’Brien spoke at the Republican National Convention last month, where he referred to Trump as “one tough SOB.” But the union has not formally endorsed a candidate in the 2024 presidential election so far.
“We look forward to Vice President Harris joining a roundtable of rank-and-file Teamsters to discuss the issues of importance to workers,” Kara Deniz, the Teamster’s assistant director of communications, told The Hill.
A date for the roundtable has not been released so far, but the Harris campaign also confirmed the vice president's acceptance, claiming a date would be scheduled in the "near future."
“The Vice President has received and gladly accepted an invitation by IBT leadership to participate in a candidate roundtable to discuss her record of fighting for Teamsters and their families and to highlight her vision for the future,” campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said in a statement.
Although Teamsters has not endorsed a candidate for 2024, Harris received endorsements from other crucial labor unions, including United Auto Workers, and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.
The Teamsters' Black Caucus endorsed Harris separately on Tuesday, per Politico, claiming Harris and her running-mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz have an "unwavering commitment to workers and their families."
“Their records reflect a deep dedication to advancing labor rights and supporting working-class Americans,” the caucus said in a statement.
