Kamala Harris' new campaign brings in largest one-day haul of the 2024 election
Harris' team said more than 888,000 contributions have been made to the campaign from individual grassroots donors, 60% of whom had not previously donated in the 2024 cycle.
Vice President Kamala Harris's new presidential campaign on Monday raised $81 million in the first 24 hours of her campaign, which marks the largest amount of funds raised within one day in the 2024 presidential election on either side.
President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping his bid for reelection on Sunday, after heavy pushing from Democratic leaders, and endorsed Harris to be his replacement at the top of the ticket.
Harris' team said more than 888,000 contributions have been made to the campaign from individual grassroots donors, 60% of whom had not previously donated in the 2024 cycle.
“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections,” campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said in a statement reported by The Hill. “Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election.”
Harris' campaign also said the influx, which includes money raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees, is the largest single-day haul in American history.
The campaign's social media accounts have also seen a sudden surge in followers after Biden endorsed Harris as his hopeful successor. Many Democratic governors have also endorsed Harris, and hundreds of delegates that were previously going to Biden have vowed to support her instead.
The House Democrats’ campaign arm have also seen a surge in support since Biden dropped out of the race according to Politico, raising nearly $1 million online since his exit. The committee noted that influx means the president's departure could improve support for the Democratic agenda down ballot in November.
“The enthusiasm from grassroots donors to elect a Democratic House Majority is at an all-time high," Courtney Rice, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokeswoman, told the outlet.
