Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday gave a short, unexpected speech at her party's convention, where she thanked President Joe Biden for his support ahead of his address later in the evening.

The convention began on Monday in Chicago, and will conclude this Thursday. Harris is expected to deliver her keynote address on the convention's final day. Her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is also expected to speak during the convention.

"This is going to be a great week and I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president Joe Biden," Harris said. "Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you continue to do. We are forever grateful for you. Thank you, Joe."

The vice president went on to address the crowd, and the upcoming election, claiming November will allow the country to unite and move forward with "optimism, hope, and faith."

"Le us fight for the ideas we hold dear and let us always remember when we fight, we win," she concluded. "God bless the United States of America."

Biden is expected to close the first day of the convention by giving the keynote address. He will speak after first lady Jill Biden, and will be introduced by first daughter Ashley Biden.
